Aaron Rai Secures Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a topsy-turvy last day of play.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from just over eight feet to seal the win, repeating his only previous tournament success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a playoff win against the same opponent.
Sunday's Play Drama
Rai entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the final green.
Playoff Climax
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (ÂŁ1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better individual. To play with him the last two days was really special,” stated the winner, the current world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to describe at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”
Other Contenders
Rory McIlroy left himself just too much to make up, coming up one shot behind in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdie putts of his as well, but his chances of topping the standings were dented by a bogey on the twelfth. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish tied for fifth with Australian Daniel Hillier.
