Blast Claims Three Police Officers While Executing Eviction Action in Northern Italy
A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a rural property in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to execute an removal notice for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
All three victims who died served in the Italian military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
Two individuals were arrested at the location and another man who ran away after the explosion was apprehended not long after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.
The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location displayed the structure reduced to a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the residents caused the blast.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Claudio Papagno stated to reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the Interior Minister confirmed.
Casualties and Damage
Those injured by the blast consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a emergency responder.
According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
He thought the detonation had happened on a level above the access point and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the blast, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told reporters, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other government officials in commemorating the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
