Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is leaving the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.
He remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and look forward tracking their development".
The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed emails showed that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood his decision to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," the company remarked.
Political Context
This news arrives after the two houses of Congress agreed on this week to endorse a bill that would require the US justice department to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The bill will then head to the administration of the White House for endorsement. The President has said he expects to sign the measure, after reversing his position on the issue following pressure from his followers.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee days ago referenced several high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.
The messages showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to introduce Summers to influential world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the public, he expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he hoped "to rebuild faith and mend bonds with the people nearest to me".
Career Background
The professor occupied leadership roles under party leaders; serving as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the National Economic Council under the former leader.
He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and remains a academic there. When stating his step-down from public duties recently on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in DC where the professor was a prominent member, announced that he was ceased to be affiliated with the institution.
He entered the board of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
